local economy The craft industry has a major place in the French economy (one company out of three). It is a full-fledged participant in the production of goods and services (820,000 French craftsmen with a total annual turnover of 132 billion euros in 1997).

It is the major employer in the private sector with 250 trades, 2.3 million workers (one wage earner out of four, on the average), and 160,000 apprentices trained each year. As for their number, the trade companies are dominant in the building, food and service industries.

In Corsica, the density of craftsmen is the highest in France with 222 people registered with the Trade Directory for 10,000 inhabitants, compared to the national average of 135. As of 1 January 1999, 5,902 trade companies existed in Corsica with 3,181 in Northern Corsica.
